The true measure of a nation wealth is not
accomplished by standard of economics but the well being of its
people.
Where the developing countries of the world are concerned,
Egypt ranks amongst the first to adopt this wise principle.
Consequently, Egypt is undergoing
what is best described as a healthcare renaissance, establishing an
ongoing series of projects all dedicated to the sole purpose of
improving the health of, what was once, one of the less fortunate of
the world’s societies.
Relative to the total area of habitable land, Egypt is
considered one of the more densely populated of the world’s nations,
housing 65 millions people with an annual growth rate of 1.9
percent.
In Egypt, public health is the
responsibility of the state. There are 100 government hospital,
including Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defense and University
hospitals, and estimated 200 privately owned
hospitals.
The total bed strength for the
year 2000, is an estimated 2.4 beds per 1,000 population; A standing
total of over 12,000 beds.
Due to the omnipresent necessity of improved healthcare, the
Egyptian government has recently established a set of new policies
concerning this issue.
They involve mainly the extension of medical services to
rural areas, the provision of upgraded and improved medical services
overall, the construction of medical treatment institutions and the
establishment of fully equipped training centers for medical
personnel.
The Egyptian government has
targeted 63 general hospitals for upgrade, 42 for equipment and
plans to build 16 new hospitals. This ongoing surge in local
healthcare activity, ultimately defines Egypt as the new virgin
territory where the medical marketplace is
concerned.
Due to the increased national
demand for improvement of local healthcare, the Egyptian medical
marketplace has an unprecedented potential.
One of the few local companies who have realized this
potential early on is MegaMed.
A
Cairo based agent for several international medical companies.
Throughout the course of the past
few years up to 50 million Egyptian pounds have been invested in
MegaMed.
The company was entrusted complete various projects under the
banners of the Ministry of Health and Population, the General
Authority of health Insurance and the Egyptian Red Crescent Society
(a branch of the International Red Cross).
These projects ranged from simple equipment
delivery\installation runs and electromechanical setups all the way
to civil work and the installation of complex medical gasses
networks.
All in all, MegaMed is single
handedly responsible for setting up some of the more prestigious
hospitals and medical facilities in Egypt.
